I purchased an Epson printer, which will be replacing my HP Photosmart printer. I actually have a few questions.
First question: When I printed with the HP printer on transfer paper, I tried a sample pack from Coastal... none of the transfer paper worked with the heat press. Was that the printer? I followed the exact instructions for each Transfer paper.
Second question: I was told pigment ink is the best to use for transfers. When purchasing a printer, such as Epson, the ink that is included with the printer, is it pigment, or is it standard? I'm aware HP doesn't make pigment ink for the printer I have, but I know Epson makes it. I was just wondering if the Epson printers come with pigment ink, or will I have to replace it before making transfers.
Thank you!

Tell us which model of printer you have and someone will be able to tell you if your printer has pigment ink or not.

I do know the epson 1400 come with claria ink......not pigment ink.

Please give us a little more information and we can give a better answer.  I'm sure someone will have the model printer you have and be able to give you an answer.

Lou, I used Red Grid, JPSS, Coastal, I'm not sure what else was there, it was coastal's sample pack. I did all of that and it would not work. Is it possible that my HP printer caused that?

No is the simple answer. Ink playa a factor in the after press. Meaning when it is washed. Just printing is just printing. But you did not answe my question. What did not work? The transfer would not come off the garment? Where was the problem so we can answer. Just it did not work does not help. Most of the time it is either time, temp or pressure. Lou

Sorry. Well, at first, the ink would not even come off the transfer. Then when I tried it the third time, the ink came of a little, but not all of it. So, a lot of the ink was left on the transfer paper.

I make some crazy mistakes, so I will ask the obvious ... did you print to the correct side of the paper?

Tell us about your heat press.  Brand, age, condition, whether you have tested its accuracy.

On JPSS, because that's one you specifically name ... what pressing procedures did you use (prepress, time, pressure, peel when and how, etc)?

When testing, be sure to note the type of paper, and carefully read and follow directions specific to that paper.  Give us a few more details and you'll get help.  Hang in there.

Well, my heat press is a clam shell, it's brand new, I bought it about three weeks ago, only used it when testing out the paper. I let the press heat up to the time that the directions stated on the JPSS pack... Then I prepressed the shirt for a few seconds, and as of pressing with the paper, I followed the exact directions.
One more question though... can it not be working because I am doing it in my basement? I'm aware there is moister in the air, but there is a dehumidifier down there, but I assume that can affect the product..maybe.

Shouldn't be the problem unless you just have water dripping off the walls.

You say your press is new.  Is the adjustment knob in the middle or is it a digital machine?  The reason I ask is it took me a couple of tries and watching on the internet videos to figure out that I had to adjust the knob to loosen the tension when I first started out.  My machine was shipped with the knob almost completely down and you could not lock down the press.

I know it sounds stupid.....and I guess was pretty dumb of me, but until I figured that out there was no way I could get a print done correctly.

Just something that happened to me when I first started out that caused me to not print correctly.

Good Luck and hope you get it figured out!

Maddening Isn't It?

Coastal samples were the first I ever used and the red square backing is not JPSS as I recall Though it works similarly and not very good paper. The blue square is JPSS and the best. Secondly it sounds as though Lou is going in the right direction. If you purchased an inexpensive china brand press it probably only reads in Celsius as mine does this means you have to convert Fahrenheit temperatures to Celsius.

It reads in Cecilius. I'm more than sure I had it set to the right temperature though.

And what was the conversion?

The conversion is to Fahrenheit, I don't remember the exact temperature it had to be on...
