I am about at the end of my options for this, so i figured i would ask this....how many colors or halftones or whatever is in a diamond plate print?

I am trying to come up with a way to make football jersey numbers have a diamond plate look...So i am thinking maybe having Ace print them up, but dont know how many colors the transfer would be, so i can get a rough estimate to my customer.....any help will be greatly appreciated.

Ace goes to 6 colors. Not sure why anyone would go more than that though unless you had a lot of shirts to print with the exact same design.

You could look at cad cut printed vinyl though for sports uniforms.

What about sublimating the diamond-plate pattern onto white twill, then cut & applique or heat press the twill onto the jerseys?  Or buy precut white twill numbers and sublimate them?  If you don't have a sub printer, buy the transfers from someone here.

Someone on here uses sublimation transfer sheets made from poly material (not the right label) ken maybe?  Seems like they come from EnMart?  Maybe they could work for you?

The issue is the amount of heat used to apply the graphic. I'll look for a transfer paper that will work.

Didn't Stahls have some numbers in vinyl in diamond plate at one time?  Or am I thinking of someone else?

I won't say I covered every supplier in the USA, but I can't find any transfer paper that would have a low enough heat application temp to not melt the Nylon.

Obviously there is all kinds of heat transfer vinyl that will work very well. The obvious issue is the Diamond plate look. The only way to do this is to find a printable vinyl and have someone with a solvent printer create the diamond look and numbers on it.

It is a shame that the client wants nylon.

Can you discern EXACTLY what material is being used?? We may be making this more complicated than it is if they are using a blend.

Anything from papillio work?

If I had some white twill, id sure try to sublimate the diamond plate pattern.  Applique takes away the heat problem.

Thanks for all the input...

Ken...it is going to be for a youth football team jerseys & they are getting Nike jerseys (100% nylon)...

I thought about getting vinyl that was printable & find someone to print & cut the numbers, but i thought that was only for cottons or a cotton blend...

Never thought about twill & dye-subbing it....I think the nylon might melt though & i my sewing skills are pretty close to zero...(thanks logoz)

I thought about designing the diamond plate numbers & sending them off to Ace or somewhere & get them to print me up some numbers, but i am holding off on this until i see if i can get it done anyway else, as i feel this might be expensive....

I have searched all suppliers i can think of & some i just found out about, so far i have come up empty....

Ok - here's my last suggestion (I promise)   Wink  twillusa.com  Application instructions for their "Sports Grip" and "Kwik Cut Sports Grip" products state that these products adhere to most fabrics including "nylon mesh."  They sell precut letters & numbers.  It might also be available by the roll - I didn't look around long enough to know for sure.  I'm not sure what this product is made from - whether it's polyester (able to be sublimated).  I don't like their website, so I would have to call them. 866-806-9120

They also sell double-sided adhesive by the roll.  I don't see it on their website - but I've purchased it from them.  Not sure of the pressing directions, so I don't know if it would work for twill letters and I don't know if it would work on nylon - or maybe they can back their twill in something that will work for your application?  In lieu of applique I think laser cut twill letters can be heat-pressed without worrying aboug fraying edges...?

Obviously, I have more questions than answers, but I'd give them a call and see if they offer a solution.

Not a new response - just an addition.  Flipping through my Imprintables catalog.  Lots of print & cut vinyl options - one presses at only 210, another is specifically for nylon, and others state that they are recommended on virtually any fabric.  The metallic might look cool with a printed diamond plate pattern.  There was a thread on here about FiveStar's capabilities, and I bet others are available, too.

again thanks for all the time & effort you all have put in on this.....I just heard back from my customer & they told me they wanted to be around $20 for the jersey printing this was numbers front & back, names on the back, team name on the front & wings on the shoulders ( i am thinking just the diamond plate numbers alone would be close to $20)

Also they just informed me they needed these by next weekend   Shocked....I just had to laugh & wish them good luck cause there is no way i could have them done by then, especially since this is Friday & i dont even know if what they want to do is even possible yet, they would be lucky to even get normal jerseys printed in this timeframe...As i dont keep numbers in stock & would have to order whatever i needed & would be lucky to even have them shipped to me by next weekend, much less have the jerseys ready....

I could most likely get it all done with stock numbers & letters, but i was told to lower my stress level, after my recent near death experience, so i just had to pass on this, it was looking like a major headache in the making...

It just amazes me that people think i can wave a magic wand & make finished merchandise just appear from thin air..

So if i wasted any of your time looking into this for me, i am sorry.....but i did learn about twill so i guess all was not lost  Grin

Uncle,

No worries on my part. Each attempt to help someone is a learning curve for everyone. We all benefit from the inputs and suggestions offered.

To pass on the job was a VERY wise move. That short a time schedule with creating prototypes and gathering materials would have been a major stress mess.

Good Move Uncle!  Don't you just hate customers who come in wanting the impossible and they needed it done yesterday.

Seems like it's getting worst in the society we live in today.  People are so used to just getting on the internet and finding what they need and it's at their doorstep the next day that they think all things should work this way.

NOT!!!!!!!!!  Welcome to the real world people!!!!!!  Grin

Glad you done the right thing and told them to move on!

Obviously, I took an interest in this post - but that's because it's quite similar to a job I'm working up.  Nothing wasted here.
