If you are new here and have not posted anything I want to let you know you don't have to be shy. We want to help you in any way we can. If you do not see a subject listed that you may have a question about it does not mean we don't have an answer for you. I am sure we do. Also feel free to recommend a new subject. You are important to the forum.

Here are my questions-

Goal: I want to add color to the sole or to the letters on the b&w image.
What I have tried:
I tried photo shop - set it image to RGB from gray scale and could not get the brush to take on a color.
I adjusted channels and that just changed the entire hue of the image.
Inkscape & xara do not seem to have brushes. Perhaps they do but I have not located them. Illustrator or photoshop then?
Summary: what software is best for this task, what tool within software, how do I make that tool work and finally, do I set the image to RGB or CYMK - I am printing to an inkjet...so I am thinking RGB..

I sent it to Corel, created a bitmap and traced it. Then broke all layers.
This is a crude and inefective way to do the work, but I am new to the finer aspects of the program as well.
I know it can be easily done in Adobe Illustrator, but I am still learning that one as well. In order to fill in segments of a drawing, all paths must be "closed" (no breaches in the line) and isolated.

Anyhow, I painted some of the spots in the drawing. The shadow will not color by its self because it is connected to all other black lines.
The image can be cleaned up further, eliminating the white areas, using the magic wand tool. If you break the connection in any line to another area, the two areas can be colored individually. Magnify the image area, erase the connection using a small brush, then color them individually.

Again, this is crude, and there are more professional ways to do it, but it might give you something to play with. In theory you should be able to re-color what I colored using photoshop.

I was wondering how to do that as well,

So when you traced, you literallly changed it to a vector?
to be able to color it in?

Some day when I get time I will activate the hundreds of tutorials for Corel and AI, the complete text book for Photoshop and really learn the software.

What I create at this time does not require knowledge beyond my current level. however "specialization is an invitation to extinction".

personal preference as to software. I happen to like Photoshop but that is because it was the first one I used.
almost Always RGB

Sorry I left you hanging...wasn't feeling well.
If you have Photoshop....open file in Photoshop...create a new layer...THEN trying using your brushes to apply color to the areas you want. This should work and if it doesn't let me know.
Again my apologies.

No worries. I will try that. I actually opened inscape and used the paint bucket - I matched Kens colors using pixie ( I liked the tones) and this worked quite well. I have since changed a few colors but overall, an excellent learning opportunity. Thanks to one and all ! You all ROCK !
